Injury reports go out Wednesday afternoon, so Wednesday morning, Grace picks up her phone. Sheâd rather not tell her family about her hip, frankly, but itâs always worse if they learn something through the media. So, no matter how much she doesnât want to talk about herself and her so-called injury and deal with her familyâs well-meaning but intrusive questions, she calls her parentsâ home phone.
Her dad picks up. âGracie! What are you doing calling in the middle of the day? Shouldnât you be running around on a soccer field?â
Grace knows exactly what she should be doing. Givhan has run practice the same way every year sheâs been on the team. Wednesday just before lunch, the team plays some kind of game, soccer tennis or keep-away. Givhan likes something fun before breaking for lunch, as if the players wonât want to come back afterward, especially on a Wednesday, since itâs the middle of the week.
Her dad doesnât need to know any of that.
âThatâs actually kind of what I was calling about,â Grace says. Sheâs always been one to rip off a Band-Aid. âIâm fine, but Iâve got a bit of a hip thing, and Iâm gonna be out for a couple weeks.â
âWhat? Honey, are you okay?â Then, muffled, she hears him yell, âMaggie! Pick up the phone! Itâs your eldest!â
Her mom picks up immediately. âHello, beautiful. You never call during the day. How are you doing?â
âSheâs hurt,â her dad says, still on the line.
âIâm fine,â Grace insists. Of course the first thing both of her parents notice is that sheâs not at practice. Like Grace is a soccer player before sheâs their daughter. âItâs a minor strain. Iâll be back on the field before you know it.â
âAre you okay?â her mom asks, like Grace didnât lead with the fact that sheâs fine.
âItâs honestly not a big deal. Iâm not limited in any daily activities outside of soccer and exercise.â
âThat sounds like most of your daily activities, sweetâums,â her dad says.
He isnât wrong, but she wishes he saw her as more than a soccer player. Maybe she can spend her time off the field figuring out how to see herself as more than a soccer player.
âI suppose youâre bound to get injured as a professional athlete, but gosh, I donât like it,â her mom says. âYou havenât been hurt since you tore your ACL.â
Grace is well aware of that, thank you. She remembers how hard it was to come back from, and she was younger then.
âIâm not particularly wild about it, either,â Grace admits. âBut Iâll be fine.â
âHow long will it be?â her mom asks. âWill we still be able to see you play in the home opener?â
The Kreweâs first home game is five weeks away.
âI donât know yet,â Grace says. âIâd rather we not plan anything until Iâm back.â
âBut we always come to the home opener,â her mom says.
âMaggie, itâs fine. The rest will be good for you, Gracie.â Her dad says it like he has decided it, so thatâs how it will go.
